There are so many exciting developments in the world of encore careers. Some people are launching brand new businesses, solo or otherwise. Some are supporting their retirement with franchises or direct sales opportunities. And some are getting involved with the Encore Fellowship Network.
This week’s BSR Broadcast guest, Steve Maser, joined Social Venture Partners Portland (SVPP) as manager of the Encore Fellows program in January, 2014. SVPP is all about making connections; the organization “cultivates effective philanthropists, strengthens nonprofits, and invests in collaborative solutions – building powerful relationships to tackle our community’s social challenges.” In association with Encore.org’s Encore Fellowship Network, SVPP’s Encore Fellows program is rooted in three intersecting phenomena: need, talent, and time. “With greater need in the community than ever and a wealth of talent and time emerging from Baby Boomers retiring from successful careers, SVP’s Encore Fellows are investing more resources than ever in the visions of the Portland area’s most promising nonprofit organizations.” The Fellows, private-sector professionals approaching retirement, are sponsored by their companies and communities to offer their expertise to some of Portland’s most visionary nonprofits.
Steve joined SVP Portland after a 35-year career at Willamette University’s Atkinson Graduate School of Management. At Willamette, he served as an administrator and taught MBA students about negotiating, managing organizational conflict, and government. His interest in effecting social change led him to the non-profit world, and today he is absolutely dedicated to the SVPP model of networked collaboration and venture philanthropy. You’ll be able to stream or download Jackie’s interview with Steve this Wednesday, and can listen time after that.
