Sean Harry is an ordained minister, a published author, a business coach, and a faculty member at the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Portland Community College. In short, he is an expert when it comes to developing a thriving business. But not only that—Sean is an encore entrepreneur, someone who completely (and successfully) redefined his career path.
“After 20 years as an ordained minister I felt it was time to do something else,” Sean writes. He went back to school, got a Masters degree in business, and then tried a few stints in corporate America…before realizing that corporate America was not for him. He spent time as a career coach, helping people through some of the most difficult transitions of their lives…and completely burned out in the process. But finally he found his niche: “A couple of years ago I noticed a trend among my clients. Many were saying things like, ‘You know, I love to do this hobby…I wonder if I could turn it into a business. Can you help me do this?’”
Sean began doing some small business coaching and loved it. “I really love that the folks I work with are looking forward with anticipation and fresh ideas,” he writes. Today, he’s been working at the SBDC for two and a half years, and has developed a curriculum for the four-week marketing class that has recently been picked up by a publisher (check out The Best Little Marketing Plan: A Simple Guide for Building a Great Marketing Strategy).
At the core of Sean’s philosophy is the conviction that knowing what makes your business special is the key to making it thrive. His own re-careering path is a perfect example: he drew on his background, passions, talents, and skills, and explored a variety of different options to find the thing that could make his coaching business special…and successful. Sean and Jackie have a lot in common (remember Principles #1 and #2 from Better, Smarter, Richer?) and this conversation is guaranteed to be fascinating…and enlightening. You’ll be able to stream or download the interview on Wednesday afternoon, and can listen any time after that as well. Remember, the BSR Broadcasts (Jackie’s weekly show on Solo Pro Radio) are now available for listening right on the Better, Smarter, Richer website!
